Vietnamese Coffee Milkshake

The easiest coffee milkshake served with sweetened condensed milk -the bold espresso is nicely rounded out by the vanilla ice cream, and balanced perfectly by the condensed milk, making the perfect sweet treat to enjoy any time!

I love Vietnamese coffee. If you’ve never tried, it, I really encourage you to give it a try. For now, just imagine some super strong coffee served with sweetened condensed milk. Does that not sound amazing? You can drink it hot or over ice (iced is my favorite). Traditionally, the coffee is made with a phin filter, which kind of resembles a pour over in many ways, but delivers a very strong product. I lived with a Vietnamese girl one year in college, and she used to make me coffee in her phin filter – boy was a spoiled! Anyways, these cool little filters are very affordable and accessible (amazon anyone?), and you can get one if you’d like. I don’t own one, so I used instant espresso powder instead. For this particular recipe, you just need any equivalent to 2 shots of espresso (or very strong coffee).

Milkshakes are pretty much always a good idea, so I decided to make one inspired by this amazing drink I’ve been raving about – Vietnamese iced coffee. It’s so simple, but the addition of the sweetened condensed milk makes it so special. Just blend together some vanilla ice cream, espresso shots and milk as needed. Then serve it up with some condensed milk, and that’s it!

Milkshakes have a lot of sugar, and condensed milk is basically straight sugar, so this milkshake is going to be sweet! Please don’t expect anything else. However, the bitterness of the coffee is the great balancer of flavor and counters the sweetness perfectly. I hope you love this as much as I did! Full disclosure, I had this in the morning, because it’s coffee.

Vietnamese Coffee Milkshake

Ingredients
  1. 2 cups (about 4 generous scoops) vanilla ice cream
  2. 1 tbsp instant espresso* (see note)
  3. 1 tbsp water
  4. 1/4-1/2 cup milk
  5. 3-4 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
  1. Dissolve espresso in water, and allow to cool.
  2. Blend ice cream, espresso and milk, starting with 1/4 cup and adding more as needed.
  3. Put sweetened condensed milk on the bottom of your serving cup (and up the sides if you wish), and pour milkshake over the top. Finish with additional condensed milk if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
  1. *You can also use 2 shots of espresso or the equivalent of very strong coffee (cooled).
